HAZARD MITIGATION
There are many different groups out there that are trying to help minimize the amount of disasters that occur in our world today. On a federal level, “the Federal Emergency Management Agency coordinates the federal government’s role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.” Among FEMA there is also the Federal Insurance Administration, the National Fire Prevention and Control Administration, The National Weather Service Community Preparedness Program and many more.
“FEMA has developed a national strategy, Project Impact. The two main components of the strategy are to increase public awareness of natural hazard risk and to reduce significantly the risk of the loss of life, injury, economic cost, and destruction of natural and cultural resources due to natural disasters.” This plan was just recently implemented as of 2010. Some key elements in order for this project to work and be successful were: hazard identification, risk assessment, research, training and education, incentives and resources, and leadership.
As you can see there are many groups and efforts going into hazard mitigation. Of course we cannot even get close to stopping all of the disasters and hazards in the world, but we can of course do our part as human beings in keeping this world as safe as possible and putting our efforts towards the right plans.
